Fried lumpia is a finger food favoured by many because it is delicious and easy to prepare. But lumpia wrapper if at all sold in the local markets is costly nowadays. With some amount of ingenuity and after some trial cooking, I have discovered that right in our backyard is a costless substitute for lumpia wrapper—the squash flower.

What follows are the easy steps to make lumpia wrappers out of the squash flower.
  1. Collect newly opened flowers of the squash plant with the sepals and about an inch of the stem intact. Each flower will serve as one wrapper.
  2. Place the lumpia filling that you prepared inside the squash flower in an elongated form, following the length of the petals.
  3. Close the petals and seal with a pasty flour mixture.
  4. Deep fry until each lumpia is golden brown.

Squash flower is rich in vitamin A.
